Getting started as a lumber yard

From sign-up to your first sent quote, in the order that works best.

LumberSet turns a builder's drawings into a priced quote from your yard. Here is the order that works best for a new yard.

1. Create your workspace

Sign up with your email and give your yard a name. You can invite the rest of your team at any time from Settings, then Team. There is no charge per person.

2. Set your estimating standards

Open Settings, then Estimating standards. This is where you tell LumberSet how your yard frames and orders: stud spacing, precut or full length studs, waste and the stock lengths you carry. Sensible defaults are already in place. You can start with them and tighten them later.

3. Add your catalog

Open Catalog and choose Import CSV to load a spreadsheet of what you sell, or add items one at a time. Takeoff lines are matched to your catalog items, so this is what gives a quote your prices. See "Importing your catalog and matching lines".

4. Add your business details

In Settings, add your business name, address, phone, sales tax and the email customers reply to. They appear on every quote you send.

5. Run your first takeoff

Create a project, pick the customer and upload the PDF drawings. LumberSet reads them and works out the materials. Your first takeoff is free, so this is a good moment to try a real job.

6. Price and send

When the takeoff is released to you, check the lines, choose Create quote, check the prices, and choose Send to customer. The customer gets a link and a PDF.

Once you are signed in, the Help button sits at the bottom right of every page if you get stuck.
